Android: Go to Settings > About Device > Status
iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About

How to check if your own phone is unlocked:

iPhone: Settings > General > About gt; Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions," it's unlocked.
Android: Settings > Connections > Mobile Network > Network Operators. Turn off "select automatically." If you see multiple networks, it's likely unlocked; if only one, it's locked.
