Lifeline vs ACP<\/strong> are both programs that work to make communication services more affordable for low-income individuals and households. While they share a similar goal, these programs have different features, eligibility rules, and benefits.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) has officially ended, many still wonder how it compares to Lifeline and which option is better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. What is ACP vs Lifeline Program? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First of all, it is worth understanding the basics of the two federal initiatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lifeline Assistance Program was established in 1985 to provide substantial discounts on telephone service.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the effort continues to support traditional wireless and landline plans, the Federal Communications Commission<\/strong><\/a> (FCC) has shifted the program’s focus to broadband while giving lower phone service discounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fundamentally, this government program helps low-income individuals and households stay connected by providing reduced telephone and internet access.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many, the Lifeline program offers an essential connection to family members, emergency services, and critical government programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you wonder, \u201cWhat does ACP stand for?\u201d Launched in 2021, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) was a recent federal initiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It offered qualified households and individuals a discount on internet service and connected devices.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ACP aimed to support underserved communities by offering discounted internet services and essential digital resources. As a result, it helped bridge the digital divide and promote equal access in today\u2019s connected world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, owning to a lack of financing from Congress, the ACP has stopped<\/strong><\/a> for now. Beginning June 1, 2024, families will no longer earn an ACP discount. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Lifeline Benefit vs ACP <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a major difference in what the two programs provide to their participants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lifeline Program provides a monthly savings of up to $9.25<\/strong> for regular people. For those living on tribal territories, the sum rises to $34.25<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Lifeline helps low-income families by offering support for phone service costs. The reduction can be applied to their bills to offset costs for wireless phones, landlines, and broadband internet services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importantly, some Lifeline participating carriers, like TAG Mobile<\/strong><\/a>, also provide free cell phones, unlimited high-speed internet, or monthly services.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But note that how much data do you get with Lifeline may vary depending on each provider. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, the ACP gave greater assistance with Internet connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It offered up<\/strong> to $30 <\/strong>each<\/strong> <\/strong>month<\/strong> <\/strong>to cover expenses. For people living on tribal territories, the savings were far more substantial at<\/strong> $75 <\/strong>per<\/strong> <\/strong>month<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike Lifeline, the ACP included a one-time device discount, offering up to $100 toward the purchase of a new phone or tablet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Lifeline vs ACP Eligibility Requirements <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To qualify for either Lifeline or ACP, applicants must show proof of low income. They may also need to verify participation in certain government assistance programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lifeline eligibility requires a family income of up to 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines<\/strong><\/a>, or participation in federal assistance programs such as: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
